HIROKO KOSHINO

Uniform design for the Japanese gymnastics team

Info
2019.09.25

Hiroko Koshino designed the uniforms of the Japanese gymnastics team for the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships which will start on Friday, October 4, 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany.

The concepts of the men’s uniform are “mountain” and “river.”
The ink smudge in the character “mountain” represents speed, as if running at a full speed, and energy soaring higher. The torrent-like brush stroke of the character “river” represents dramatic dynamism and dignified strength, with vigor like that of anadromous fish that go against the current.

The concepts of the women’s uniform are “Kumadori (kabuki make-up) ” and “light”.
The red color of Kumadori is said to represent justice, strength and courage, and the shining Swarovski crystals add gentleness to the strength. Swarovski crystals are also used abundantly to create “light” in the flowing layers of curves.

The World Championships are an important milestone on the way to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Please check out the excellent performance of Japanese gymnasts and the uniforms that support them!

Having incorporated an improvisation-like live piano performance in her 2019 AW fashion show, she is putting more and more importance on music. This exhibition presents her ever-expanding artistic expressions, in particular paintings that are inspired by music or have a musical feel to them. The painting she drew while listening to Chopin, a master of classical music, features lines that freely run through and offers rich imagination. Also, in the world of Japanese traditional music, Koshino is a master Nagauta Shamisen player belonging to Kinekatsukai. In the national competition of Nagauta Kinekatsukai, held in Kabukiza Theatre in April this year, she drew the stage background for the performance of Shokyokushu. Its original ink painting will be displayed in this exhibition for the first time.

The harmony created by encounters of different senses–Japan and West, music and painting, beauty of architecture… Please listen carefully to the music that comes to your heart when you see Koshino’s paintings in Ashiya surrounded by nature.

10:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Closed: Tuesday, July 16 / Sunday, July 21 / Tuesday, July 23

KH Gallery Ginza will hold the exhibition entitled “KH Gallery Ginza Gift of Light – Hiroko Koshino x circle side”. KH Gallery Ginza has been loved for seven years since its opening in 2012. For the finale, this exhibition offers a dream-like world with a paper dress created in 2000–2001 and installations of light.
The dress, developed from a plane surface to three dimensions like origami, is one of the creations that Koshino, who has been expressing Oriental beauty in clothes, is deeply attached to. The materials, lightweight like paper, create graceful alterations of straight lines and curves. The exhibition also features installations that project light on the dress, created in collaboration with the art unit circle side. They give off a scenery of flowers spreading at the feet and a haze hanging over. The dress that projects light in the darkness will allow you to experience the brightness of life.
Koshino will continue to create fashion and art that free and empower the secret power within human beings. The scenery of the white dress–reminiscent of the fresh beginning–surrounded by flowers and light is a gift to you from KH Gallery Ginza. Please enjoy it to your heart’s content.

*Notice
KH Gallery Ginza, which has been presenting Hiroko Koshino’s art activities since its opening in 2012, will close after this exhibition. Activities as an artist have been a starting point of all creations for Koshino. KH Gallery Ashiya will continue to present her works and hold collaborative exhibitions with creators in other fields.

We would like to express our sincere thanks for your support over the years.
